Party loses Rae Bareli too; workers blame Sonia, Rahul Gandhi for apathy in campaign
The Congress suffered a major jolt in its citadels Amethi and Rae Bareli represented by Rahul Gandhi, the party’s vice-president and AICC president Sonia Gandhi. Barring one seat, the party was wiped out from the regions.
In Amethi, the party lost all four seats of the Nagar Palika and Nagar Panchayats. The Nagar Palika seat of Gauriganj was won by Samajwadi Party while the BJP candidate bagged the Jais seat. Similarly, the prestigious Amethi Nagar Panchayat seat was won by BJP candidate Chandrama Devi by a huge margin. An independent won the Musafirkhana Nagar Panchayat seat.
Busy in Gujarat Assembly poll campaigning, the Congress president did not come to Amethi even once to support party candidates. Sensing defeat in advance, the party did not give support to its candidates for the two Nagar Panchayat seat in Amethi.
In the absence of Rahul, senior party leader and Amethi scion Dr Sanjay Singh and her wife Amita Singh had led the party’s poll campaign. But they could not influence voters to retain even a single seat for the party in Amethi.
While the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and party National President Amit Shah had held a massive rally on October 10 in Amethi, the party’s state leadership could see the writing on the wall.
“We had requested that if nor Rahul, at least Priyanka should visit Amethi and Rae Bareli to boost the sagging morale of party workers but no on paid any heed to our requests,” said a party functionary.
In Rae Bareli, the party could manage to win only Nagar Palika seat thanks to the party MLA Aditi Singh and her influential father Akhilesh Singh. The party, however, suffered a crushing defeat on all eight Nagar Panchayat seats of Lalganj, Dalmau, Naseerabad, Unchchar, Bachchrawa, Parshadepur, Maharajganj and Salon.
Samajwadi Party candidates won Dalmau and Unchchar while BJP won Parshedpur and Maharajganj Nagar Pachayat Seats. “We will certainly look in the reasons and causes for our party’s defeat,” said Capt SJS Makker, UPCC general secretary.
