Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani on Thursday mounted a scathing attack on Congress, alleging its leaders extended support to those who wanted to destroy the nation ignoring the sacrifices made by the security forces.

"Congress did not think twice before standing by those who shouted slogans for destroying the nation ignoring the sacrifices made by our security forces in protecting the nation," Irani told an election meeting in Karbi Anglong.

Security forces work hard and make immense sacrifices all over the country to protect the nation, she said, adding BJP would not allow a few to destroy the nation's unity. Irani appealed to voters to bring BJP to power in Assam to ensure that "the country remains secure and united".

Women's status in the North East is high but it was during Congress rule that a girl was dragged on the streets of Guwahati. She was referring to an incident in July 2012 when a teenaged girl was molested in full public view by a mob.

"Assam is famed all over the world for Ma Kamakhya but it is indeed shameful that women no longer feel secure to step out in the streets and crime against them are increasing the state," she said.

If voted to power, BJP will set up women police stations in each district, she said, adding presently there is only one women police station in the state at Panbazaar in Guwahati.

"When Goddess Laxmi comes, she does not hold somebody's hand but comes in a lotus. So I appeal to you to press the lotus button (BJP's poll symbol) and bring Laxmi to your state in the form of development," the Union Minister added.
