The Opposition Congress in Maharashtra, which is struggling for to revive itself especially after successive defeats since its rout in the Lok Sabha and assembly poll in 2014, has turned to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to regain lost grounds in Maharashtra.

The trigger being the release of Madhur Bhandarkar's directorial venture Indu Sarkar. Party workers from across the state have decided to step up protest against the release of the film slated for July 28 and rejuvenate the ailing party organisation. Congress workers have argued that the film is an attempt by Bhandarkar to malign the Congress party's image.

In the recently held election to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the Congress managed to win only 31 of the total 227 seats in Greater Mumbai. The party lost its traditional bastions Vidarbha, western and northern Maharashtra to the BJP and Shiv Sena.

Veteran Congress leader Ratnakar Mahajan said Gandhi's connect with the rank and file of the party was so alive that a man who distributed milk in the Lutyens' Delhi became an MP that was Rajesh Pilot.

"So the Congress party at present needs to take leaf out of Indira Gandhi's life of standing up to challenge to the unity and integrity of India and secular and democratic fabric of the polity. For that the organisation at the grassroot level will be enlivened and the present leadership will have to go beyond the events and press conference,'' he told DNA.

Party spokesman Anant Gadgil said Indira Gandhi is still relevant as she was a fighter with charishma. "Despite defeat, she toured the entire nation and revived the party organisation. Congress cadre in Maharashtra is not willing to accept any kind of historical distortion that maligns Gandhi's image especially when the party is celebrating her birth centenary,'' he said, adding that, "I am confident the Congress will have several box office hits in forthcoming elections."

Further, the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee president Sanjay Nirupam worte to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) expressing his concern over the portrayal of Indira Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi and other Congress leaders in the movie. He demanded that the special screening be organised for Congress leaders but his demand was rejected by Bhandarkar.
