Amid the hectic election campaign in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, Congress will hold a nation-wide agitation programme 'Bhugat Raha Hai Desh' on November 8, as Rahul Gandhi accuses the Centre of having "destroyed" the country's economy with "two torpedoes: Note ban and GST".
During the three-hour long deliberation Rahul had with party leaders on the two issues, it was decided that they will reach out to people, particularly in the trade hubs of poll-bound Gujarat, and hold candle light marches against the "faulty" implementation of GST, as the declaration of demonetization completes a year.
Since demonetization was announced at 8 pm last year, Congress has fixed the same time to hold a candlelight march across the nation. The day is being observed as a 'black day' by other opposition parties as well.
While the party came out with a six-point questionnaire on demonetization, Rahul trained guns on the government over its decision to celebrate the first anniversary of demonetization. He alleged that Prime Minister Modi "failed" to understand the pain of the people.
Besides, a decision was also taken that in the upcoming meetings of the GST Councils, Finance Ministers of Congress-ruled states will espouse the "pain and sufferings of MSMEs, shopkeepers, traders, and common men".
"I don't know what is there to celebrate," Rahul said, adding that while the economy was able to withstand the "torpedo" of note ban, it could not withstand the one of GST.
The economy, he said, "is in tatters now", adding that Modi is insensitive to the despondency these decisions have caused.
Rahul's meeting was also attended by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, and Jairam Ramesh.
Since Congress has in the past been calling GST its "own baby", the meeting highlighted "loopholes" in GST's implementation without abruptly disowning the key economic reform measure.
After the meeting, Gandhi said GST is a "good idea" which has been "destroyed" by the Modi government. Reeling out figures, Congress Communication Department Chief Randeep Surjewala raised questions on the reasons given by the government for demonetization to highlight the "folly" of the decision. On GST implementation, he said, "it's a building without a foundation".
"Congress will not rest until a resolution to these issues is found by the government to the satisfaction of business and services," Surjewala said.
