Two days ahead of the election in seven municipal bodies in West Bengal, Congress and CPIM leaders met the state election commissioner AK Singh. They had warned Singh of a sit-in demonstration in front of his office if he is unable to conduct the election in a free and fair manner.

"Of the seven municipalities, four are in the hills and three are in the plains. Especially for the ones in the plains, we have requested the state election commissioner to take all the required measures to ensure that people can exercise their franchise freely," said Congress MLA and leader of Opposition at the state Assembly Abdul Mannan while leaving the SEC office.

He said that anti-social elements along with police officers who were working as TMC cadres were wrecking havoc on Opposition workers. "Our MPs, MLAs were attacked. We have given a warning to Singh that we will put up a sit-in demonstration in front of his office if he fails to ensure a peaceful poll," Mannan said.

He was accompanied by state Congress general secretary Om Prakash Mishra, CPIM MLA Sujan Chakraborty and senior CPIM leader Rabin Deb, among others.

Deb said that during the all party meet on April 10, they had demanded the area which goes to poll should be free from outsiders. They added that administration needs to keep an eye on hotels and guest houses of the locality to ansure intruder activities.

"We have also instructed our party members to stop any attempt at looting vote and booth capturing," Deb said. He added that the forthcoming polls would be a rehearsal for the SEC ahead of the panchayat election in 2018.

On May 14, elections to seven municipalities would be conducted. Of these, four — Darjeeling, Kurseong, Kalimpong and Mirik — are at the hills while three are in the plains. They are Raiganj in North Dinajpore district, Domkal in Murshidabad district and Pujali in South 24 Parganas district. Poll results will be out on May 17.
