You give them affection and they will learn to love, you hurt them and they will be scarred forever.
Corporal punishment in schools is one of the scars that the children carry throughout their life.

And to stem the increasing number of cases of physical and mental harassment of children, the school education department has directed the government and private institutions to install a compliant box inside their campus wherein children could drop their complaints and grievances that they face in school. The complaint box will also display the contact details of the State Commission for Child Rights Protection (SCPCR) and its officials.

“The arrangement has been introduced in schools so that children could feel free to share their problems with the principal,” said district education officer Sanjay Goyal.

“As per the RTE guidelines, coporporal punishment is completely banned,” he added.  The district education office of Indore has received  eight direct complaints pertaining to corporate punishment in schools during the session 2013-14, Goyal said.

In realty, most of the cases harassment go unreported due to the fear of teachers and of the institutions.

Although majority of private schools are yet to receive the official order on the complaint box  installation, they encouraged the initiative stating that it will enable students to connect with the school.

“We haven’t received the order but it’s a welcome move. Although our children are very open to us, any child who feels hesitant in addressing problems can make use of this box,” said ILVA School Principal Sanjay Mishra.

The order came as a result of the SCPCR’s recommendations to the education department  made last month.

There are some schools in the city which already have a drop box system which invites students and staff to suggest ways of improvement as well as address their grievances.

Punita  Nehru, Principal at Shri Satya Sai Vidya Vihar believes that no system can replace direct counseling and interaction with children.

“There is no harm in coming out with this system but very few children have the guts to go ahead and complaint as it creates hassle for them. The best way is to counsel children in school, she said.

Neither directly endorsing nor rejecting this concept, have parents felt that the system must be there for the suppressed children who find difficult to seek direct help from their teachers or the school at large.

“It should be called a suggestion box and not a complaint box so that the child can freely go and share what he is going through,” said parent of a Daly College student Sanjay Shahani. The school department has asked schools to implement the system at the earliest.
