A Congress worker has filed a complaint with the Election Commission (EC), against a BJP councillor in Surat, on Sunday.

He has accused the councillor of breaching the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). Aslam Cyclewala, spokesperson of Surat Congress, has alleged that BJP councillor from ward no. 22, Sonifalia Deepak Africawala was distributing notes to lure people. Africawala had been caught, on camera, distributing Rs10 notes to band group outside Surat BJP office on Saturday morning when all 12 BJP candidates were going for file their nomination.
Though the act was breach of model code of conduct, it went unnoticed for nearly 24 hours before the city Congress lodged a complaint against it.

“Deepak Africawala is an advocate and despite knowing this, he breached code of conduct brazenly. The incident shows that BJP leaders and its workers don’t bother about anything, even law. We have demanded strict action against Africawala for his act,” Aslam Cyclewala said.

Defending his action, Deepak Africawala said that he had distributed the money after the band members demanded ‘bakshis’ (tip) from him.
