On Tuesday, Centre told the Supreme Court that messages posted on social media that related to freedom of expression will not be seen as an offence.

There were petitions in front of the court challenging the provisions of the Information and Technology law. The law allows the police to arrest those who post "annoying, inconvenient and dangerous messages" on social media.

Supreme Court has reportedly said that the government does not wish to curtail freedom of speech and exercising this freedom won't be considered an offence. Though cyber crimes will fall under this law. The Centre has reportedly said that there is no connection of a citizen's freedom of speech and expression with "annoyance, inconvenience, danger or obstruction" as mentioned in the Information and Technology Act.

Reports say that a panel has been set up to suggest ways of protecting freedom of speech. The panel will also look into any misuse of the law by the authorities and stop it.
