Reiterating Modi government's resolve to double the farmers' income by 2022 by putting reforms in agriculture sector on fast-track, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Radha Mohan Singh on Wednesday said funds won't be an issue as the coming budget will be dedicated to the farmer. In his inaugural address at a conference here organised by Crop Care Federation of India (CCFI), Singh criticised the 10-year UPA rule for inadequate allocation of funds for farming and informed that the BJP-led government at the Centre has almost doubled the budgetary allocation and also provided money through various funds.

Singh said the Union Budget 2019-20 will be dedicated to the farmers and it will be another step forward in contributing to the realisation of the goal of doubling farmers' income by the year 2022. "The budgetary outlay for the Ministry of Agriculture has increased to Rs 2,11,694 crore during 2014-19 against Rs 1,21,082 crore during 2009-2014,'' said Singh. He said remarkable progress has been made in the agri sector as a result of the schemes and policies of the government, said Singh.

Singh downplayed the present agrarian crisis and said a slew of schemes, in fact, have helped reduce the cost of production, ensure remunerative price for farmers' produce, stop wastage of farmers' produce and ensure an alternative source of income.

Minister's statement is crucial. Modi government may announce a fixed subsidy scheme for farmers in addition to announcing some kind of a universal basic income plan to woo farmers and the youth. Additionally, scientific farming is likely to be encouraged by testing of soil and issue of soil health cards on a large scale.
