Coimbatore: Police rescues 23 girls allegedly abused at a textile mill

On Sunday, police carried out a rescue operation to rescue 23 girls from a textile mill at Olapalayam near Coimbatore. A report in The Hindu states that Revenue Division Officer (RDO) of Dharapuram G. Saravanamurthy carried out this operation.

Saravanamurthy stated some of these girls, who were between the ages of 11 and 18, had called the Erode RDO and filed a complaint, the report added. They had said that they faced ill treatment and harassment at the mill.  

A team was then formed which included the Deputy Director of Industrial Safety and Health Department, Kangayam Tahsildar, Assistant Inspector of Labour, District Child Protection Officer, Childline, and All Woman Police Station, Kangayam.

When the team reached the mill, they found that the mill employed 540 girls. The mill and living area was checked by the team. There were 13 girls who complained of abuse and torture and wanted to return home, according to the report. Some of those rescued also said they had been beaten and the management confiscated their mobiles so they couldn’t talk to their parents.

The girls who were rescued are likely to file a police complaint. As of now, the rescued girls are lodged at Mariyalaya Home for temporary shelter in Tirupur. The investigation is still on.
