Coimbatore: Denied permission to write exam; student attempts suicide

A second year BBA student of the Government Arts and Science College in Coimbatore allegedly tried to commit suicide today after the management refused to allow him to write his examination following which some students staged a picketing demanding that he be allowed to do so, police said.

They squatted on the road for some time but withdrew the agitation following assurance from police that discussions would be held with the management on their demand. Dejected over refusal to write his semester examination for lack of attendance, Dinesh (19), an inmate of the college hostel allegedly consumed poison this morning, police said.

Some students who noticed him struggling for life, admitted him to the Government Hospital where he was recovering.

College principal, Kumaresan claimed that Dinesh has only 28% attendance and was not eligible to attend the semester examination, as per rules.
