Bharat Parashar was appointed as a special judge in the coal block allocation scam by Delhi's Lieutenant Governor, Najeeb Jung in August 2014. The man made news on Wednesday for having summoned former prime minister Manmohan Singh as an accused in the court in the coal block allocation scam. He joins the prestigious club of three judges, who have summoned any prime minister as an accused in the court in the past. Before Parashar, only judges Prem Kumar and Ajit Bharihoke had summoned former prime minister PV Narasimha Rao in 1990s. The cases Rao was summoned in were Lakhubhai Pathak cheating case and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha bribery case.

Those who have seen him at work say Parashar persists to make sure the guilty is punished in any case.

The following are the five things you need to know about Bharat Parashar:

  1. Last year, Parashar was in news for his judgement in the high-profile Phoolan Devi murder case. He had sentenced Sher Singh Rana for life, for killing Member of Parliament and former dacoit, Phoolan Devi.

  2. Parashar was also known to have given the Delhi police a tough time in IPL spot-fixing scandal case. He threatened to slap the police with costs for repeated adjournments in the case unless they got their act together.

  3. When Parashar took over the Coal Scam Allocation case in August 2014, he hit headlines for questioning the CBI why former prime minister Manmohan was not quizzed in the scandal as Singh held the coal portfolio between 2005 and 2009.

  4. Parashar had also attacked CBI director Ranjit Sinha and his team for the shortcomings in the CBI probe in the coal block allocation case.

  5. In the past, Parashar has also served as a sessions judge in Delhi and later moved to Patiala Courts. At the Delhi High Court, he served as a joint registrar.

Apart from former prime minister Manmohan Singh, former coal secretary, PC Parakh and Aditya Birla Group's chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla were summoned in the court as accused too by Bharat Parashar.
