The Delhi police has arrested a 46-year-old coach and former national wrestler on charges of raping a 16-year old national-level kabaddi player at his residence.

Accused Naresh Dahiya would train girls at north Delhi's Chhatrasal Stadium as well as at his outer Delhi akhada.

The incident came to light after the girl approached senior police officers and gave them a complaint against Dahiya alleging that he committed the crime twice after promising her better opportunities in sports.

According to senior officers, the kabaddi player mentioned in her complaint that Dahiya raped her on July 9 and 10. She said she could not approach the police immediately as she was traumatised.

DCP (Northwest) Milind Dumbere said that the allegations are being verified. "Following a medical examination, an FIR was registered," he said. "The accused has been booked for rape. The matter is further being probed."

A senior officer said that the athlete told the police that she was also threatened by her coach to keep mum about the rape, or else it would affect her career. It was after she narrated her ordeal to her parents, that the police was informed.
