In a swift execution of the plan to appoint the chief executive officer (CEO) for Mumbai, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has already selected an officer who will be given formal charge soon. Sources in the state government claimed that Gautam Chatterjee will take the charge of the post and coordinate between all the agencies.

What is Fadnavis' out of the box idea?

The replacement of Planning Commission with the new National Development and Reforms Commission, in order to achieve 'Sabka Vikas Sabka Saath'.

The CM has also requested PM Modi to head an empowered group to make Mumbai a global commercial hub. Seeing as Mumbai drives the country's economic growth, this group should meet every 6 months for ensuring central ministries like ports, airports, railways and state agencies like MCGM, MMRDA, to collaborate and solve infrastructure issues by 2019.

What will be CEO's job entail?

A source in the state government informed: "While the committee at the centre will boost bigger projects needing its nod, the Mumbai CEO will be responsible for coordinating between all the agencies and get the different projects cleared faster at the state level."

Congress, NCP of similar opinions – opposing the move

Meanwhile, Congress and NCP in the state have vociferously opposed the move of the national level committee for Mumbai, terming it to be a smart move to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra.

Vijay Waddettiwar, deputy leader of Congress, was of the view that his party would never agree to such a committee, saying: "When BJP has its power in both the state and Centre, what is the need to have such committees."

Ajit Pawar, NCP leader in legislative assembly said that the NCP would also fight against the decision. "We have made it clear earlier, and even now, we will not accept the decision of such a committee," he said.

Not all MLA's against the move

However, Amin Patel, Congress MLA from Mumbadevi welcomed the move, saying that anything related to the development of Mumbai is welcome. "We want prolonged issues expedited," said Patel.

Subhash Desai, Shiv Sena leader and Minister of Industries, said that if something good is happening for Mumbai, he would not object. "However, we will not compromise on the pride of the city. BMC should remain the supreme authority," he added.
