Diversions and barricading during prime minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to the city tested the patience of thousands of commuters on roads on Saturday. People were seen sweating in sultry weather while waiting for the PM’s convoy to pass. The police had done barricading on a number of roads to provide smooth passage to the prime minister’s cavalcade.

Cops were deployed in huge numbers on JLN Marg and roads leading to Chandpol where the PM was to launch the underground Metro tunnel project. The prime minister’s convoy was to reach Chandpol from Sanganer airport.

As cops disallowed vehicles to pass through the roads merging with JLN Marg, long serpentine queues of vehicles caused massive traffic jams at many places on Saturday.

Link roads leading to JLN Marg like Shaheed Amit Bharadwaj Marg, SC Marg, Park Avenue Road, Kailgiri Road, Gandhi Marg, Shanti Path, Moti Doongri Road, Govind Marg and Bajaj Nagar Marg remained clogged with vehicles.

Similar condition prevailed during the afternoon hours when the PM convoy returned to Sanganer airport.

Vehicles ferrying schoolkids remained stranded on roads for hours. Tired of waiting in humid conditions, many kids were seen taking a nap in their school autos and buses.

Even the ambulances carrying patients to hospitals had to change their routes. Meanwhile, a large number of cops deployed on JLN Marg remained on their toes to ensure that there is no security breach during the passage of PM’s cavalcade.

Cops deployed near Shanti Path had a tough time reining in some stray animals roaming on road.
