Tamil Nadu Information Technology Minister M Manikandan on Tuesday told the State Assembly that the government will recommend to the Central government for banning TikTok, a popular social media app, following complaints that the app is being used to degrade Tamil culture.

Participating in the debate on budget, Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi legislator Thamimun Ansari said TikTok was degrading culture and encouraging pornography, besides causing law and order trouble. “We have social responsibility. Various political leaders have demanded a ban on the mobile app. Hence, the state government should take steps to ban the app in order to protect the youth and women of the state,” he said.

Responding to his request, the minister said that various sections are demanding ban on this mobile application. “We will soon seek a ban on TikTok, just like the Blue Whale game was banned by the Centre,” he said.

Tik Tok (formerly musical.ly) lets users post 15-second videos of themselves where they often enact scenes from popular movies or songs. The app recorded over 500 million downloads in the Google Play Store.

PMK founder S. Ramadoss demanded that the TikTok mobile application be banned to stop the “cultural degradation” it has triggered in society. In a recent statement, Dr. Ramadoss said the mobile application was being used without any regulation. “When the application was introduced, it gave young people a chance to showcase their singing and dancing talents. But it is sad to see youngsters so engrossed in the application,” he said, adding that TikTok’s users were uploading suggestive sexual dance choreography.
