A 14-year-old class X girl ended her life on October 20 allegedly after her 19-year-old boyfriend defamed her on facebook. The girl's family members allege that the inaction on part of the police, even after them filing a formal complaint against the youth months back, led to her suicide.

Sakshi Tiwari, a resident of SK Stone in Mira Road had jumped to death from the terrace of a seven-storied building on October 20. Raising fingers at her acquaintance Kaushal Dev Murari, 19, her mother Saloni Tiwari alleged that the boy turned abusive after the family objected to him courting the girl. Sakshi was a student of RBK School and the accused was a former student of the same school.

"We had complained to the police in July itself about the boy after he harassed her and tried to defame her. He had earlier posted some distasteful remarks about her on his Facebook page," said Rahul Tiwari, Sakshi's brother-in-law.

"The police, however, didn't act on our complaint. Her death could have been averted if there was action on their part," said Tiwari.

Sakshi's mother Saloni said the family is yet to recover from the shock. "My daughter ended her life as the police failed to take action against the boy. He harassed her and posted abusive content ...leading to her taking the extreme step," said Tiwari.

When contacted, Rajesh Pradhan, Superintendent of Police, Thane Rural, said, "The girl and boy was having an affair for the last six months. The family members did not approve their relationship. They had lodged a complaint in July and we had registered a case against the accused under section 149 of the CRPC. However, the family members settled the issue amicably and did not follow up on the case," said Pradhan.

"Now, we have filed a case of abetment of suicide under the Indian Penal Code against the accused and have arrested the youth. We are investigating further," said Pradhan.
