Reacting sharply to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitely's remarks on doing away with LPG subsidy for the well-off, Aam Aadmi Party today asked the government to clarify what will be the new income bracket which will get subsidy benefit.

"The government must make it clear what will the new income bracket, which will get the subsidy benefit. Mr Jaitley should clarify what he meant by people like him, because he's the richest minister in the union cabinet with assets on more than Rs 70 crore," the party said in a statement. It also threatened that if the lower middle class was deprived of the subsidy benefit, then the party would take to the streets. "We warn the government that if the lower middle class is deprived of the benefit, the Aam Aadmi Party will have to take the issue to the streets," it said.

The Finance Minister had on Friday said, the government was considering doing away with the LPG subsidy for the well-off. "The next important decision India will have to take is whether people like me...(are) entitled to get our LPG subsidy," he said at the HT Leadership Summit yesterday here. Currently, LPG consumers get 12 cylinders at a subsidised rate, and for any requirement beyond this they have buy the cylinder on market price. The price of subsidised cylinder costs Rs 414 in Delhi, while its market price is around Rs 880. "People like Mr Jaitley with assets of more than Rs 70 crore or a monthly income of more than Rs 10 lakh really do not need subsidy and the government should first ensure that their diesel guzzling SUVs do not run on subsidised diesel," AAP said.
