Almost three years after a floating restaurant was inaugurated by the then state Tourism Department Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, only to be put on the backburner, the project has finally seen the light of the day. The restaurant, AB Celestial, which will be anchored close to the Bandra-end of the Bandra-Worli sea link, will be inaugurated once again, this time by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, on Saturday.

The development is significant considering the fact that Mumbai does not have any such wine and dine vessels even though it sees the highest number of foreign visitors. While floating cafes and eateries in Bangkok, New York, and European cities are a part of the city culture, in India, only Goa and Hyderabad have so far utilised their waterfronts to attract tourists.

"It will be a great experience for food lovers and people who want to spend a good time with their friends and family amid a breathtaking view of the sea," said a spokesperson for Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC).

Sources in the state government said that the restaurant was non-functional for so long due to several issues including lack of a proper approach road towards it, hindrance in getting permission from the Traffic Department, etc. The sources said that it was hurriedly inaugurated in 2014 by the state Tourism Department due to the then approaching election's code of conduct.

Officials having direct knowledge of the project said that nearly 70 people can be accommodated in the vessel on which the passengers can dine or party till the permissible limits set by the civic authorities and police. The restaurant will be functional mostly in the evening, they said. According to sources, the vessel will have two decks, with a big hall inside.

In Mumbai, parties and dinners on ships, which used to be oragsnised maily to celebrate the New Year, had been barred since the terror attacks of 26/11 when 10 Pakistani terrorists entered the city through the sea and unleashed a carnage, leading to the death of 166 people.
