Citing Dadri, PIL alleges Uttar Pradesh government of 'discrimination' in giving compensation

A Public Interest Litigation was on Wednesday filed in the Allahabad High Court charging Uttar Pradesh government with adopting a "discriminatory" compensation policy and citing the hefty solatium granted to the family of Akhlaq who was lynched by a mob in Dadri as a case in point.

The PIL was filed by a Mathura-based advocate Ritesh Chaudhary who questioned the state government's decision to allot four plots of land in addition to Rs 45 lakh as compensation to family members of Akhlaq who was beaten to death by a mob over rumours over beef consumption.

The petitioner has contended that there has been no uniformity in the amount offered by way of compensation by the state government to victims of various tragedies and it appeared that there was "discrimination" on the basis of caste and religion of the deceased. The PIL is likely to come up for hearing before a bench later this week.
