Christian Dior's plea to 'ramp' up Taj Mahal refused

French fashion house Christian Dior's request to hold a fashion show at Taj Mahal has been refused by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), saying the iconic monument is not the right place for such a cultural event.

Officials from Christian Dior had reached out to the Indian Embassy at Paris, requesting permission to hold the event. In reply, ASI officials have intimated Embassy officials that while the ASI allows for events to be organised at certain monuments, but the UNESCO World Heritage Site is not one of them.

"Unlike the Red Fort, where events do not affect the inflow of tourists or their movement within, there is no space at the Taj to hold any event. The surrounding locality will lead to logistical problems, too," said an ASI official.

The Supreme Court had, in May this year, pulled up the ASI for not taking the requisite steps to protect the monument, and directed it to consider whether a private agency was needed. The ASI has, however, kept the Taj out of the 'adopt-a-monument' scheme, which ran into controversy after the Red Fort was given up for adoption to the Dalmia group.

Musical Past

In 1997, music composer Yanni performed live at the Taj Mahal. An appeal was made then to the SC to squelch the concerts, arguing that construction, lighting and sound would damage the Taj
