Chinese military's cyberattack unit may target Indian defence installations, warn Intel agencies

An intelligence report has warned against the Chinese Army's plan to target Indian defence installations to steal sensitive information.

Indian Intelligence agencies have has sounded alert about the Chinese military's plan to target Indian defence installations through cyber attacks. According to intel reports, Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA)'s secret military unit Unit 61398 may carry out cyberattacks to steal sensitive information from India. 

As per the latest intelligence inputs, China's cyber warfare activities have indicated that the PLA's 'Unit 61398' is currently involved in Geo location intelligence collection, tracking information sources in cyberspace, interception and deciphering of digital communication of worldwide.

"Unit 61398 is reported to have its headquarters in Shanghai and groups of hackers have been suspected to be involved in cyber spying with the help of Chinese Intelligence officers. The Chinese hackers use the APT system to attack industrial and government organisations of foreign countries and this is a cause of concern for us," an intelligence officer told Zee News on the condition of anonymity.

As per the report, the hackers of Unit 61398 are using malware to steal information by using Ice Bag, Hidden Lynx and APT and also different types of Trojan Malware, professional advanced persistent threats using programme.

The report suggests that the Shanghai-based unit of the PLA's General Staff Department, known as Unit 61398, is a part of PLA Strategic  Support Force also known as a PLASSF. Unit 61398 has been equipped with special fibre optic communications infrastructure in the name of national security.

Last month, US charges Chinese intelligence officers for jet engine data hack. As per a Reuters report, 10 people charged conspired to steal sensitive data “that could be used by Chinese entities to build the same or similar engine without incurring substantial research and development expenses,” the indictment released by the US Department of Justice said.

The indictment by the US Department of Justice said that at the time of the hacks, a Chinese-state owned aerospace company was working to develop a comparable engine for use in aircraft manufactured in China and in other countries.

India has developed Arihant, an ingenuously-built nuclear-propelled submarine, which completed its first deterrence patrol recently. The submarine is capable of firing ballistic missiles and can stay underwater for months. 

India has also acquired modern aircraft from USA like P8I. Boeing's P8I is a long-range anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft capable of broad-area, maritime and littoral operations. A variant of the P-8A Poseidon that Boeing is developing for the US Navy, P8I can detect underwater enemy submarines and is also able to do maritime reconnaissances. 

Sources said that Chinese hackers may attempt to hack the Indian installations to gather more information on its technology.
