Even as the deaths due to chikungunya outbreak climbed to 10 in the national capital, Delhi government and the municipal corporations swung into action after receiving flak for sleeping over the dreaded epidemic. The Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government health minister Satyendar Jain, tossed the ball to the BJP-controlled civic bodies, directing them to carry out fogging across the national capital. "We took a review meeting of the three municipal corporations, and have asked them to keep a check at the mosquito breeding at construction sites and challaned the owners of those sites causing breeding of mosquito. We have also cancelled leaves of all doctors and nurses working at Delhi government hospitals and dispensaries so that patients don't face any problems," said Jain.

The most recent death of a chikungunya patient was reported on September 13, of that of an 80-year- old Mahendra Singh. On Tuesday, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital reported the deaths of four patients. In a statement on Wednesday, Apollo revealed death of five patients over the last three weeks."We have had five deaths in the past three weeks of patients with chikungunya fever, most of whom were elderly and had associated co-morbid disease conditions and complications like chronic kidney disease, coronary artery disease, which affect the course of recovery," the hospital said.

The patients who died at between September 12 and 13 at Ganga Ram also had co-morbid conditions of asthma, diabetes, and a kidney problem, conditions which could have been aggravated by the fever.

Union heath minister JP Nadda on Wednesday convening yet another 'high-level meeting, said his ministry was working closely with the Delhi government to provide help and logistics in treatment and surveillance during the fever season.

Meanwhile, a day after criticising the municipal corporations, Delhi MLAs including Delhi Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra took to fogging in their respective constituencies. "We have asked all the agencies to come together and fight the ongoing disease collectively. Also we have asked Congress and BJP led municipal corporations to join us in our initiative for the people of the city," said Mishra.

Meanwhile, the Delhi BJP targeted the Delhi's AAP government over the rise in dengue and Chikungunya cases. "Every year task force was formed to fight such diseases after the monsoon but this year it has not been formed. By the end of July it had become clear that there is great danger of the outbreak of dengue and chikungunya in Delhi but Delhi government did not make any arrangements for additional beds in the government hospitals. Mohalla Clinics have also proved to be of no use," said Satish Upadhyay, BJP's Delhi President.
