Criticising the central government over the recent incident of mob lynching, former home and finance minister P Chidambaram on Sunday stated that a mere statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to denounce cow-vigilantes is of no use and government's action to curb the incident should speak.

Chidambaram was in Pune on Sunday where he interacted with the media fraternity on the topic of 'internal security and current financial scenario'. While raising the issue of mob lynching in the country, Chidambaram came down heavily on the government.

He said, "During the UPA government there was hardly any incident of mob lynching but during the tenure of present government, the incidents of mob lynching have increased. Today, the people are taking law in their own hands thinking that nothing will happen to them as they have the backing of the government."

Stating that PM's statement on the issue is not enough, he said, "When PM was giving the statement against mob violence of cow vigilantes in Sabarmati Ashram, on the same day there was mob lynching in Jharkhand. It shows that the government needs to take tough action to show that they are serious on the issue."

Speaking about the violence in Jammu and Kashmir, Chidambaram said, "If the peace has to be prevailed in Jammu and Kashmir, the coalition government of PDP- BJP must go. When it comes to ideologies, these two parties are poles apart as a result they are unable to bring peace in the state. In first six months of this year, the number of incidents of violence in Jammu and Kashmir have increased."

"The present government thinks that military solution is the only solution to the Kashmir problem but the Congress party completely rejects this approach. If peace has to be prevailed in the state, we must take a path of dialogues. There will not be any peace without dialogue," He added.

When he was asked about the present Indo-China standoff, he said, "It is a highly sensitive issue and it will not be appropriate for the opposition party to comment on the issue before government makes official statement on it . The Prime Minister and Defence Minister will have to give a statement on the issue in the parliament."

Chidambaram also took a dig at the central government for its decisions on demonetisation and implementation of GST, Chidambaram.

Making sarcastic remarks over RBI for not able to provide figures of cash received during the demonetisation, he said, "After so many months of announcing demonetisation, the RBI has now placed the order for currency counting machines. They should have approached the Tirupati temple and got the hundi counting machines with the help of which they could have counted the currency by now."

Speaking about GST, he said, "With multiple slabs for different products, whatever is introduced in the country is not GST but indirect tax."
