Congress witnessed a landslide victory in Chhattisgarh Assembly polls with the grand old party leading in at least 68 constituencies leaving far behind the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The saffron party was able to bag just 16 seats out of the 90 constituencies.

As BJP stared at defeat, Chief Minister Raman Singh took responsibility for the poor performance. Singh said, "For 15 straight years, people of Chhattisgarh gave me and the BJP a chance to serve them. We did our best, and made a difference to the lives of a common man."

The election was fought in my name so I take the moral responsibility for the defeat, he added. "We will form a constructive role in the Opposition," said Singh, adding, "Even if I work all my life, I will not be able to repay the love and support I have received from the people of Chhattisgarh."

As Congress wrested power from the BJP in Chhattisgarh after 15 years, the party's state unit chief Bhupesh Baghel credited strong party organisation for the impressive showing and said he was "not expecting" such a big margin of victory. "We were not expecting such a big blessing from the people. We were expecting around 60 seats," Baghel said.

The Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee chief, who is seen as one of the contenders for the chief minister's post along with TS Singhdeo, said it was for the high command to decide who would be the chief minister.
The Chhattisgarh poll results is a huge set back for BJP stalwart Raman Singh, who led the party for 15 years in the state.

As per the trends, released by the Election Commission of India (EC), Congress got 43.0 per cent vote share, BJP managed to get 32.9 per cent, JCCJ received 7.4 per cent, IND managed 6.2 per cent and BSP got 3.4 per cent.
In 2013, BJP won at 49 seats and Congress had bagged 39 seats and Bahujan Samaj Party one and Independent one seats respectively.

Chhattisgarh voted in two phases on November 12 and November 20. The first phase, where 18 constituencies went to vote, saw a voter turnout of 76.35 per cent. The second phase, where the remaining 72 constituencies went to vote, saw a voter turnout of 76.34 per cent. There was an average overall turnout of 76.35 per cent.
