Polling a whopping 11 per cent of the vote, the Bahujan Samaj Party—Janata Congress Chhattisgarh combine seems to have delivered a large chunk of the mandate to the Congress in a state where victory margins normally hover in the range of 1 per cent to 2 per cent.

Arguably the most valuable player in Chhattisgarh politics, former chief minister and JCC chief Ajit Jogi may well be the primary architect of the spectacular Congress victory in the state.

Weeks before the polls the former Congress leader had inked a pre-poll pact with the BSP, a move which came in for severe criticism from the Grand Old Party which was prompt in terming the alliance as a 'B-team of the ruling BJP.'

According to latest reports, the alliance is leading in six assembly segments but has managed to stake its claim over 11 per cent of the vote in the state.

Incidentally, in the 2013 elections, the BJP and Congress were divided by less than one per cent of the vote with the BJP notching a total of 41 per cent and the Congress polling an aggregate of 40.3 per cent.

The Congress at the time of filing this report had notched a little over 43 per cent of the total vote while the BSP-JCC foray has pushed the BJP to a little under 33 per cent.
