Chhatradhar Mahato, convenor of the Peoples’ Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA) and five others were sentenced to life imprisonment at a Midnapore court on Tuesday.

Mahato’s counsel Mrinal Kanti Chowdhury said, “Chhtradhar Mahato along with Sukhsanti Baske, Sambhu Soren and Sagun Murmu, have been sentenced to life imprisonment under the  Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Besides the four, Raja Sarkhel and Prasun Chatterjee – two other PCAPA members – have been charged with sedition."

These six were convicted on Monday and the quantum of punishment was decided by the Midnapore court on Tuesday.

“Besides the UAPA, the six have been convicted under various provisions of the IPC dealing with murder, criminal conspiracy, waging war against the state and various other sections of the Arms Act and the Explosives Act,” added the counsel.

Mahato was one of the most prominent faces of Maoist-backed tribal resistance against the erstwhile Left Front government in West Midnapore district’s Lalgarh. Led by Mahato, they launched an agitation virtually cutting off the area from the rest of the district and ruling it for nine months.

In June 2009, central paramilitary forces and state police officials reclaimed the Lalgarh area and conducted intense operations and nabbed Mahato on September 26, 2009.

Mahato and several other leaders were seen sharing dais with Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee on several occasions before she became the Chief Minister in 2011.
