Chhath Puja tragedy: 4 people killed after being hit by train, 7 children die due to drowning in Bihar

The final day of Chhath Puja was marked with two tragic incidents.

Four persons were killed and two others injured after they were hit by the Delhi-Jaynagar Swantantrata Express while crossing railway tracks near Rambhadrapur railway station in Samastipur district of Bihar today. 

The group was crossing the tracks after performing Chhath Puja and did not see the approaching train due to morning fog. The accident took place near Rambhadrapur railway station, around 35 km from Samastipur town, Senior DCM Samastipur division, Birendra Kumar said.  

While three persons died on the spot, one succumbed to injuries at the hospital, he said. The injured have been sent to Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Agitators were protesting with the bodies, affecting train services between Samastipur and Darbhanga section.

In a separate incident, seven children were killed by drowning during Chhath Puja celebrations.

Two girls, aged between 8 and 9 years, died in Barh sub division of rural Patna near Malahi ghat, officer in-charge of Barh police station Manoj Kumar Sinha said. 

Three boys aged between 14 and 16 years lost their lives near Bharpura ghat in river Bagmati in Khagaria district during course of Chhath rituals this morning. 

The boys, all friends, went deep in the water, while bathing during morning Arghya of Chhath.  As one of them started drowning, two other boys with him tried to save him and all the three ultimately died, Officer in-charge of Chautham police station of Khagaria district Sunil Kumar Sahni said. 

An uncle of one of the victims, who unsuccessfully tried to save them, managed to swim to safety, he said. 

Another mishap took place in Muzaffarpur district where two children drowned in Kadani river, a tributary of Gandak, during holy dip on the occasion of Chhath. 

The four-day Chhath puja celebrations will conclude today following oblation to the rising sun in several states including Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh.  

A large number of people started gathering on Ghats of various rivers and other water bodies since early morning.  Devotees are breaking their 36 hours fast after paying oblation to the Sun God.
