Chennai wall collapse: DMK demands CBI inquiry

The opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu today held a rally in Chennai and demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the wall collapse case that left 61 people dead.

DMK's senior leader MK Stalin, who submitted a memorandum to Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah, said, "When Chief Minister Jayalalithaa visited the accident spot and briefed media, she gave a statement that no violation of rules had taken place. After this, she appoints a fact finding team on the incident. Furthermore, a one-man commission is also appointed.

"All this shows that even before the commission's findings, the CM announces her conclusion.This is what we oppose. Therefore, we demand a proper inquiry and a CBI probe into entire matter," he added.

The building had collapsed approximately 20 kilometers away from Chennai, at Moulivakkam. Most of the people who were trapped under the debris were construction workers from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), taking suo motu cognizance of a media report, had issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu calling for a report within two weeks into the incident.
