Bharathiyar University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr A. Ganapathy and Chemistry department Prof Dharmaraj were arrested on Saturday by anti-corruption police in Coimbatore while accepting a bribe from an assistant professor to complete his probation.

The arrest was made by Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption after Suresh, an assistant professor, in the Chemistry department approached them. “We laid a trap to catch the VC red-handed,” a senior officer said.

Ganapathi had apparently settled a Rs 30-lakh deal for allotting the post of assistant professor to Suresh. He received Rs 1 lakh in cash and Rs 29 lakh in post-dated cheques, said DVAC sleuths. On Saturday morning, Suresh handed over the cash and cheque to the vice-chancellor at the latter’s residence opposite the university campus on Marudhamalai Road in Coimbatore when the police arrested him.

Prof Dharmaraj, who aided the vice chancellor also arrested by the police, a DVAC release said. The police also conducted raids at Ganapathy’s residence at Tiruchy and recovered a huge stash of cash and gold, sources said.
