The annual day event at Chennai's Presidency College has raked up a controversy. Staff and students called a dance performance at the annual day function as "vulgar" and the video of the dance has reportedly gone viral.

A report in Deccan Chronicle quotes the principal of the college stating that the video is fake. The video reportedly shows a scantily clad man and woman dancing to a Tamil song and the moves are said to be indecent.

However, the former president of Students Union of the college, S Anbarasu, who was present at the function, told the daily that the dance performance did happen and that the students who performed were not from their college. They were from a dance group, he said. He has alleged that the principal and warden knew of the programme content and the event was about four hours long.

Some of the students have stated that the principal was present at the event, but principal T. Pramananda Perumal has said he left after the inauguration. He told the daily, "The video which got viral is completely fabricated to degrade the institution. There is a group of teachers who are involved in fabricating the video and pulling down the institution. It was a performance by a dance troupe. They are not our students.”  He also added that the college does not give permission for such dances and that he has complained to the police commissioner.

A senior college professor has told the daily that there were two issues related to the incident - one was that the teachers were present and the other was that the principal did not give permission. However, he condemned what had happened at the college.
