Come summer in Chennai, people think of all the ways they can to beat the heat. Another initiative that several people take up is helping animals and birds by placing water bowls for them. This year, a new initiative has been launched by the People For Cattle in India (PFCI) along these lines.

Arun Prasanna, Founder, People For Cattle in India (PFCI), stated, "Chennai summers are as terrible for homeless animals as they are for people. Homeless animals are tough (given that they survive under tough conditions) and can even go for days without food, but they really struggle when they have no access to drinking water. You may think they can drink from nearby water bodies (which are rare, given how scorching the summers in Chennai are) but that water is often too contaminated for consumption."

Talking about how the Water Bowl Challenge works, Arun explained, "The Water Bowl Challenge starts on 13 March, 2016. The intent is to encourage people to place water bowls in their houses, terrace, balcony, garden, office, streets and wherever else possible in order to help birds and animals quench their thirst anytime they need. To take up this challenge, people can collect his/her water bowl for the event venue. After this, people can click a picture with an animal drinking from the bowl and post it on social media. They need to tag a minimum of 5 friends and ask them to do the same."

The Blue Cross is also planning to distribute about 2000 water bowls. Schools and colleges have also come forward to take orders in bulk to help animals and birds during the hot summer season.

Each bowl can hold five litres of water and those who pick up a bowl are asked to change the water once in two days.
