Chennai: Schools to remain shut for another two days due to waterlogging

Schools and colleges in the city are to remain shut on Wednesday as well.

Many schools in Chennai city and the suburbs are still waterlogged, though there wasn’t much rain on Tuesday. Nearly 200 to 300 schools will remain shut in the city and suburbs for another two days as a result. Schools and colleges in the city are to remain shut on Wednesday as well.

A report in Deccan Chronicle quotes A Anitha, Chief Education Officer saying that schools in Villivakkam, Saidapet, Tondiarpet, Vadapalani, Virugambakkam, T Nagar, Egmore, Chetpet, Nungambakam, Amenjikarai, Koyembedu, Adyar and Besant Nagar, are water logged. She added that out of the 1000 schools, about 200 to 300 were waterlogged and flooded. Students can’t enter the school and thus they have decided to remain shut. 

The Chennai, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur district administration has also declared a holiday for schools on Wednesday after speaking to the meteorological department. This was a precautionary measure they took. The regional met department has said there may be heavy showers in the city on Wednesday.

Schools are now expected to cut down on the Christmas holidays to make up for the leaves now.
