Chennai is fighting back and we are with you, says Sachin Tendulkar

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar on Friday expressed his solidarity with the people in Chennai battling flood waters that disrupted normal life in the city. He also expressed condolences for the people who lost their lives after the century's heaviest rains pounded Chennai.

With people in the city rallying together to pitch in help with resources, rescue and essential supplies, Tendulkar urged them to fight back in the challenging times.

Latest government reports put the death toll at 270 in Tamil Nadu, 54 in Andhra Pradesh and two in Puducherry. The estimate of loss to property that was earlier pegged at Rs 10,000 crore plus by the Tamil Nadu government but is expected to go up substantially. 

Meanwhile, the situation seems to be easing with no fresh rains and a sharp fall in water levels of Adyar and Kumbh rivers that were in spate following torrential rains as rescue and relief operations continued in full swing. On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Chennai and announced Rs 1,000 crore more aid to Tamil Nadu.

With Chennai airport inundated following heavy rains, the Navy's base at Arakkonam is serving as the makeshift airport for supplying relief material as well as for bringing in National Disaster Response Force teams.
