In a shocking incident, a first-year college student was stabbed to death by a jilted lover near her college in the city in the broad daylight on Friday.

Police said the victim, 20-year-old Aswini Mohan, a BCom student at Meenakshi Academy of Higher Education and Research, was walking towards the bus stop around 2:45 pm when the accused Alagesan attacked her with a knife. He stabbed her in the throat. She was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.

Alagesan was caught by a passer-by when he attempted to flee from the scene. He was thrashed by bystanders who tied him up and handed him over to the police.

Police said that though Aswini and Alagesan knew each other for some years, she was not interested in getting married to him. Despite her refusal, Alagesan kept on harassing her. Police said she had filed a complaint with Maduravoyal Police on February 16. They added that Alagesan was let off with a warning as the girl's family did not want the FIR to be filed.
