A 21-year-old girl has been rescued after she was allegedly held overnight by four men who gangraped her.

A report in Deccan Chronicle states that she was held and raped at Guduvancherry in Kancheepuram district. The four accused have been identified as Kannan (21), Chandrasekhar (18), Jayachandran (21) and Ganapathy (24). On Monday evening, the police arrested the four men who are from Tirunelveli.

The girl was reportedly working in a plastic manufacturing company and lived with her widowed mother. The men are said to have been known to her and lured her saying they should celebrate her birthday on Sunday night.

According to the police, the girl was taken to a local market first where they bought her a gift. They then took her to a place in Vallanchery where the other two men joined them, forced her to drink liquor and took turns to rape her.

On Monday morning around 2:30 am, the girl managed to escape and people heard her shouting and came to her rescue.

The police told the daily that her mother did not want to file a police complaint at first as it would 'shame' the family. It was reported that the men took videos of her as well and told her that they would post them on WhatsApp if she filed a complaint. The mother finally filed a complaint after friends and neighbours insisted.

The four men were arrested on Monday evening and the victim was sent for a medical test.
