Despite the heavy rains in the city, people here did manage to celebrate Diwali by bursting plenty of crackers. A report in Deccan Chronicle states that city generated 38 tonnes of garbage on November 11 thanks to crackers.

In Chennai, the Alandur area had the highest amount of garbage with about 3.5 tonnes collected on November 11 and 4 tonnes collected on November 12.

Adyar, Sholinganallur and Perungudi, besides Alandur, had the most fire cracker waste in the city. The waste has been collected and will not be taken to the landfill sites in Perungudi or Kodungaiyur adds the report. It will be taken to the Common Hazardous Waste Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility set up inside the Gummidipoondi Sipcot campus so it can be incinerated stated the report.

Officials have stated to the daily that the waste collected is less than what was the norm in the city. It looks like the rain put a dampener of the bursting of crackers for many people.

Collecting the waste now remains a monumental task. Rockets and sparklers are easy to pick up but the waste from bombs mixes with the mud in the rain making it tougher to collect state officials.
