A 14-yr old boy died of electrocution on Sunday night after stepping on an exposed power cable that was not re-laid properly after it was dug up for repairs, on a road near his home in Chennai's Mugaliwakkam locality.

This tragedy of apathy comes days after the unfortunate death of a 23-year old engineer, Subhasree, on whom an illegal banner fell and was subsequently run over by a truck.

Police said, Dheena, a student of class 9 at a government school in MGR Nagar had stepped out of his house at 9:30 pm and the roads were waterlogged due to the showers earlier in the night. As he walked across the road, he stepped on the exposed wire and died on the spot.

Dheena is the eldest of two sons of Senthil, a share auto driver, and his wife Vanitha.

It is alleged that the Chennai corporation workers dug the road and didn't cover it properly, leading to live wires being exposed.

Police were unclear regarding whether the Corporation officials or Electricity Board officials were at fault.

"First, the people in the vicinity were the ones to notice the boy lying on the road and it was over an hour later that his parents came to know," said officers of the Mangadu police station.

It is said that, on seeing the boy lying unconscious on the road, the passers-by rang up the electricity board and asked them to switch the power connection off, in order to venture close to the boy safely.

After the power was turned off, the boy was rushed to the nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The relatives of the boy and neighbors are said to have protested seeking the arrest of officials who were allegedly responsible for the teenager's death.

The police have not filed a complaint and the mortal remains have been sent to the government hospital.
