A 29-year-old man who allegedly posed as a cop and attempted to rape an engineering student near here was nabbed on Monday by a special team, police said.

On December 22, Arunmozhi alias Bharathiraja impersonated a policeman and took the 19-year-old girl, who was with her boyfriend at Neelangarai beach, with him saying that he was taking her to a police station for enquiry, police said.

Instead of going to the police station, the man took her to a secluded place and allegedly tried to rape her, they said. The motorcycle and mobile phone used by the man have been seized, they said.

Initial investigations revealed that Arunmozhi, who hails from Puducherry, was working as a Drug Safety Associate in a top IT firm in the city.
