Change in winds to make National Capital, Northwest India shiver this week

The Capital's mercury is set to plunge further from Tuesday, making the nights chillier.

A western disturbance that brought icy cold winds from the Mediterranean had triggered fresh snowfall and rainfall over the Western Himalayan region. With the disturbance now about to pass, cloudy conditions are set to abate and there will be an incursion of cold and dry northwesterly winds.

"There will be a change in the westerlies and southwesterlies from Monday in Delhi-NCR. With the passage of the western disturbance, the clouds will move towards Nepal and cold dry winds will result in a dip in temperatures. The snowfall in hill states also temperatures in plains," said Charan Singh, IMD scientist.

Under the influence of the change in wind pattern, Northwest India including Delhi-NCR is likely to see a fall of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in the minimum temperatures, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said .

On Sunday, the Safdarjung observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 22.9 degrees Celsius and minimum at 8.5 degrees Celsius.

Himachal Pradesh was in the grip of a cold wave, with snowfall over Shimla, Dalhousie, Manali, Keylong and Kufri.

In Kashmir valley, Kupwara, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, and Batote and Katra in in Jammu saw rainfall on Saturday. With the western disturbance passing, the rain and snow will cease for a while, IMD said.
