The state cabinet has decided to make Chandrapur a dry district from April 1, 2015. And finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar has claimed that though the state would lose a revenue of Rs 200 crore by implementing prohibition in the district, the state would ultimately gain Rs 2,500 crore as prohibition would help avoid the negative impact of liquor consumption.
The state cabinet has decided to make Chandrapur a dry district from April 1, 2015. And finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar has claimed that though the state would lose a revenue of Rs 200 crore by implementing prohibition in the district, the state would ultimately gain Rs 2,500 crore as prohibition would help avoid the negative impact of liquor consumption.
Addressing a press conference, Mungantiwar said with the cabinet deciding to impose prohibition in the district, he had fulfilled the election promise to the people of Chandrapur.
According to the minister, 515 licences had been issued for liquor shops in Chandrapur district and they would not be renewed. He said in the district, from now on, there would be ban on buying and selling as well as consuming liquor.
Chandrapur is the third district after Wardha and Gadchiroli in the state, which have been declared dry by the state government.
Mungantiwar said that for effective implementation of prohibition in Chandrapur district as well as the entire Chandrapur-Wardha-Gadchiroli zone, 44 new posts would be created in police and excise departments. He said to implement prohibition, the excise department would get a full time superintendent along with three inspectors and other staff. The police department will also have an equal number of additional force led by an IPS officer.
The minister also said the government would undertake a massive awareness drive in the district. Services of street play artistes, self-help groups and youth groups will be sought in all 847 gram panchayats and 1,700 villages in the district. He said the govt would also conduct de-addiction drives and also rehabilitate those now working in liquor shops.

Mungantiwar, who said he had kept his word by making Chandrapur a dry district, declined to reply when asked to which government bungalow he would shift. DNA had reported that there was a tussle going on between Mungantiwar and minister for education, sports and culture Vinod Tawde over Devgiri bungalow. Mungantiwar said he would soon shift, but not where to.
