Chandigarh's Capitol Complex to get world heritage status by 2016?

Union Territory administration of Chandigarh gave a powerpoint presentation to the members of UNESCO's International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) on the management plan of the Chandigarh dossier, prepared in the year 2008.

According to The Indian Express, the team was here to assess the structure of city's Capitol Complex for the bid to get world heritage status. The team is expected to give an assessment on the areas that need improvement. The reports will then be submitted to ICOMOS and, finally, to the World Heritage Committee.  

According to the UT Home Secretary Anurag Aggarwal, the approval to the dossier is expected by June 2016. The dossier concerns the policy decisions regarding the alterations and additions to the Capitol Complex, risk preparedness and firefighting arrangements in several buildings.

Chandigarh has been bidding for the honour since 2006, but has not been able to make it due to either a no-clearance from the Ministry of Culture or UNESCO. The Chandigarh report focused on its capital complex, apart from buildings designed by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, and Sukhna Lake and Leisure Valley.
