Chandigarh coldest at 3.2 Celsius; fog disrupts life in Punjab and Haryana

Union Territory of Chandigarh recorded season's coldest night at 3.2 degrees Celsius as severe chill swept the city with fog affecting normal life at many places in Punjab and Haryana.

A bright sun shine greeted the residents of Chandigarh this morning, but the minimum temperature dropped three degrees below normal to settle more than two notches since Tuesday.

Freezing cold waves swept Hisar in Haryana on Tuesday as the maximum temperature settled at 10.2 deg C, which was ten notches below normal, the MeT Department in Chandigarh said. The minimum temperature at Hisar on Wednesday settled at 6.7 deg C.

Freezing cold swept Ambala, which recorded a low of 4.8 deg C, two notches below normal. Karnal, too, experienced a cold night at 4.7 deg C, down three notches while biting cold waves also swept Narnaul at 4 deg C.

In Punjab, piercing chill prevailed in Amritsar, where the minimum settled at 4 deg C. Ludhiana recorded a low of 6.6 deg C. Patiala recorded a two degrees below normal minimum at 5.7 deg C.

Meanwhile, a MeT official in Chandigarh said that fog prevailed at many places in Punjab and Haryana in the morning on Wednesday. During the past few days, fog has adversely hit normal movement of road, rail and air traffic.

However, an official at the Chandigarh Airport on Wednesday said that as weather was clear in the city the flights would operate normally from Chandigarh, barring those flights which had already been cancelled by some airlines with prior notice.
