A 26-year-old youth died after he was allegedly attacked with sharp-edged weapons in Saketri village, following which two persons have been arrested, a police official said on Tuesday.

A group of about 10 persons attacked Varinder with sharp-edged weapons outside his house in the village of Mansa Devi Complex in Panchkula, Haryana last night, DCP Panchkula Anil Dhawan said, adding they, later, bundled him into their vehicle and headed towards Sukhna Lake route.

Varinder was also dragged to a distance and an attempt made to allegedly disfigure his body by crushing it under the vehicle before it was abandoned on the Saketri-Sukhna Lake road by the accused. Later, he was found lying unconscious on the road and was rushed to PGIMER where he was declared brought dead.

Dhawan said police were investigating whether the murder was the case of a mistaken identity as the main accused and his accomplice wanted to settle a score over some old rivalry with Varinder's cousin Avtar Singh.

The villagers said the murder was a fallout of an enmity which started during a game of cricket about six months ago. The DCP said the main accused, the son of a corporator of Panchkula Municipal Corporation, has been arrested along with one of his accomplice.

A manhunt is on to nab the other accused, he said. Earlier in the day, residents of Saketri village blocked the Chandigarh-Mansa Devi Road near railway under bridge for over two hours to protest against the alleged police inaction in the case.
