Amid the surge in COVID-19 cases in Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government is considering shutting down markets for a few days. However, the very thought of shutting down marketplaces have triggered uneasiness among Delhi traders.

The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) convened a mahapanchayat of traders on Wednesday in which as many as 200 business institutions of the National Capital will participate.

CTI Convener Brijesh Goyal and head Subhash Khandelwal said that the meeting will also discuss the growing congestion in the markets as well as the negligence of authorities.

All market associations will be requested to ensure that guidelines pertaining to COVID-19 are followed in the markets. The officials will also be requested to visit the markets themselves and check that the rules such as wearing of masks, social distancing, etc., are being fully adhered to.

The meeting was attended by Chandni Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Chawri Bazar, Naya Bazar, Khari Baoli, Sadar Bazar, Kamla Nagar, Connaught Place, Nehru Place, Sarojini Nagar, Rajouri Garden, Gandhinagar, Khan Market, Associations like Shahdara, Mayapuri, Lajpat Nagar, Rohini, Pitampura, Tilak Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Green Park, Greater Kailash, etc. have also been invited.

CTI General Secretary Vishnu Bhargava and Ramesh Ahuja said that the business class of the city won’t be to withstand the economic losses arising out of another lockdown if imposed. “Traders have already suffered losses in millions, so they don’t want any markets to be closed again”.

This comes a day after Health Minister Satyendar Jain clarified that there is no need to enforce another phase of lockdown in Delhi again while adding that the third wave of COVID-19 has passed its peak.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday sought power from the Centre to impose lockdown in those market areas which may emerge as COVID-19 hotspots.

"We are sending a proposal to the Centre to give power to the Delhi government to impose lockdown in market areas which may emerge as COVID-19 hotspots," the chief minister said.
