Pune rural police have arrested 15 people and detained three minors in connection with the violence at Chakan during the Maratha rally. Of the 15 arrested people, seven are teenagers.

Manoj Daulat Giri (23), Suryakant Balu Bhosle (21), Parameshwar Rajebhau Shinde (22), Abhishek Vinod Shah (16), Vishal Ramesh Rakshe (26), Satyam Dattatraya Kad (19), Sameer Vilas Kad (20), Rohidas Kaluram Dhanawate (19), Vikas Ankush Naikwadi (28), Sohail Rafiq Inamdar (19), Pravin Uddhav Gawade (23), Akash Maruti Kad (25), Sachin Digambar Amte (27), Anand Dinesh Mandale (18) and Prasad Rajaram Khandebharad (18), and three other minors, all are the residents of Chakan area. They were arrested on Thursday morning.

“While investigating the Chakan violence on Monday, we collected some video footage where some miscreants were seen damaging properties and pelting stones. On the basis of these video footage, we identified these people and arrested them," additional superintendent of police Tejaswi Satpute told DNA.

According to police, many of them are college students. During the course of investigation, their further role in violence will be established, a senior police officer said.

Earlier, some lawyers had declared their support for the ongoing Maratha agitation and they had announced to provide free legal aid for the agitators. When the arrested persons were produced before the court on Thursday, lawyers supporting the Maratha agitation represented them as a defence counsel.

During the argument, defence lawyer Milind Pawar argued that of the 15 arrested, only two to three persons had participated in the rally and they had also gone home after the peaceful demonstrations. "None of those arrested persons have played any role in the violence. None of them were present when the violence was taking place but still police have arrested them," Pawar claimed.

"Earlier police had given a statement in media that the persons responsible for violence were outsiders. However, all the arrested persons are the residents of Chakan which is clear that the police action is contradicting their own statements," the defence counsel said.

All the arrested persons have been remanded in police custody till August 8.
