Narendra Modi's ascent to prime ministership may have glorified the humble roadside 'chaiwala'. But this middle-aged tea vendor in Kanpur is a bewildered man after receiving a summons from the CBI in connection with the multi-crore 'Vyapam' recruitment scam of Madhya Pradesh.

"I don't even know what Vyapam means and what the scam is all about," the 'chaiwala' Rajendra Kumar alias 'Raju' told reporters who virtually mobbed him on Saturday after word went around that he had been sent a CBI summons. "I have never even been to Madhya Pradesh," he said, apparently at a loss for words.

Raju said he had received a summoning notice to be present at the special CBI court, Sagar (Madhya Pradesh), which is conducting the trial into this case, on Wednesday next.

For the past 20-odd years, Raju has been running the tea stall outside the Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College, which has figured prominently in the CBI investigation into the recruitment scam.

The scam involves massive irregularities and corruption in the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) or MP Vyavsayik Pareeksha Mandal, abbreviated in Hindi as Vyapam. As many as 48 people related to the scam have died in mysterious circumstances.

In August last year, the CBI had raided the GSVM Medical College in search of an absconding MBBS student, who is said to have appeared in a Vyapam entrance exam in Bhopal as a solver.

The MP STF has listed as many as 54 students of this medical college as accused in this scam. The accused students belong to batches from 2009 to 2014. Out of these, 22 students have re-joined the college, six are in jail and eight are missing from the college. The remaining 18 students were from 2009 batch about whom the college didn't have any information.
