Today is the 8th day of Chaitra Navratri which is also known as Durga Ashtami. This day is dedicated to Goddess Mahagauri and worshipping this avatar of Goddess Durga is considered highly auspicious.

It is believed that the divine light of Goddess Maha Gauri illuminates the entire universe. She protects and blesses her devotees with her four hands. She is adorned in white garb and beautifully seated on her ‘sawari' – a bull. 

On this day people worship kanyas and distribute prasad of halwa.
