Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will undertake the repairs of Crawford Market at South Mumbai. The civic body has hired an agency who will carry out the repairs at Rs58 crores. Standing committee passed the proposal on Wednesday.
The century-old Crawford Market, which falls under the grade I heritage precinct, had been mired in controversies over it's redevelopment. The structure has been in dilapidated condition for past few years.
Previously the repair cost was estimated at around Rs40 crores, but the cost escalated in the last couple of years. Under the new proposal, minor internal repairs such as repairs on wooden doors and furniture would be undertaken.
Samajwadi Party Corporator Rais Shaikh raised questions on the area of the market to be undertaken for repairs and about a pending court case on the market.
However, the BMC administration only said the work would be carried out in phases.
