India is all set to reimpose ban on the National Socialist Council of Nagalim - Khaplang (NSCN-K) responsible for killing 18 jawans in Chandel in Manipur in an ambush attack on June 4.
Union home ministry on Friday moved a cabinet note seeking top declare NSCN-K as an outlawed organisation under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
The cabinet committee on security (CCS) will take a call on home ministry's note on Monday and in all likelihood will blacklist it as a banned organisation, sources said.
The move would not only allow government to break the financial backbone of NSCN-K by attaching its properties in Nagaland but would also put its functionaries in check through invoking Interpol's red corner notice, sources said.
The step also comes in the background of concerted attempts by NSCN-K to abrogate the ceasefire agreement with India, ostensibly at the behest of Chinese authorities, which it succeeded in breaking in April this year by opting out from the meeting called to extend the ceasefire.
NSCN-K's deliberate move to abrogate the ceasefire agreement and fall into Chinese design to form a large umbrella organisation of rebel northeast outfits, called the UNLFWSEA (United National Liberation Front of West South East Asia) and create a government in exile has cut out a tough task for the Indian security establishment as it directly hampers India's Act East policy, sources said.
As demonstrated by recent visits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is keen to spread out its wings in the East where it is in direct competition with China.
"A bigger game plan is underway that could jeopardize Indian plans to extend its economic and strategic interests across Southeast Asian countries. India needs to tread cautiously by taking Myanmar into confidence and while doing so need to tackle insurgency threat at bay that is operating mainly from the Sagaing division of Myanmar where China wields influence," said sources.
A lot depends on how India engages with Myanmar in immediate near future and if it could persuade Myanmar's junta to act in earnest against Indian insurgent groups and also manages to carry out surgical raids at rebel camps based in Sagaing division to cut their flight short.
